My name is Ashlee Buchanan. I am the owner of THE DOG MOM and have been a professional dog trainer for five years with over 10 years of experience as a dog walker and pet sitter. My passion is helping owners learn how to “Speak Dog” in order to build a strong, positive relationship between handler and canine. I do this by using interactive games and positive reinforcement. The word NO (almost) does not exist in my training philosophy. I use counter conditioning, with clear and concise body language, and simple hand signals to make my training easy and effective.
I volunteer and help raise funds for the non-profit Good Dog-Dog Talk Rescue. I also actively support local shelters.
MY METHODS:
I am very proud to specialize in puppy training and basic obedience. I have established my unique Leash Training System to curb pulling, barking, and aggression. I have extensive experience with breeds of all sizes and temperaments.
I design a specialized training program for each dog. Because every dog has an individual personality and specific pack abilities, each dog must be treated/trained in a way that they understand. I help them learn to “Speak Human.”
When I rescued my first dog, Cash, in 2009, it was all new to me. We needed to be in sync and on the same page. It all started there, at that moment. It was because of him that I was inspired to learn to “Speak Dog.” He passed away at the ripe old age of 17 ½. His memory continues to live on in every dog that crosses my path.
I have studied the methods of various trainers throughout the years learning their diverse styles. It helped me establish my own distinctive style which encapsulates more than just the standard rote training. I endeavor to train the dog as a whole from tricks to emotional wellbeing. I incorporate a holistic approach with every dog using energy and Chakras to help further communicate and better understand how they are feeling, which directly effects their daily behavior.
MY TRAINING:
My background as a former competitive gymnast gave me the perfect foundation as a dog trainer. Gymnasts must “never skip steps.” We did the same thing, repetitively, until it’s part of who we are, embedded in the body all while maintaining patience and poise. Because of my training and belief in muscle memory and repetition, I am always calm under pressure. I vigorously continue to educate myself as new studies and training developments are always evolving.
I am Red Cross Pet First Aid Certified.
I am proficient in Canine Body Language, Reactivity and Canine Adolescence.
I have certificates in:
Dog Health: Dog Breeds and Basic Anatomy
How Dogs Learn (Alison)
Animal Behavior and Welfare (University of Edinburgh).
